Soil Calibration Journey – Anuradhapura District

On 19th September 2025, the Biogenic Soil Sense Field Scanning Team conducted an extensive round of soil nutrient analysis and calibration in Elayapaththuwa, Anuradhapura (8°27’13.7”N 80°20’06.1”E).

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most significant agricultural districts, with vast stretches of paddy fields nourished by ancient tanks and irrigation systems, alongside pulses, vegetables, and field crops. Its contribution to the nation’s food security makes it a critical region for building a strong soil calibration database.

Engaging with Farmers

During the fieldwork, our team had the opportunity to interact with local farmers. Their insights were both valuable and eye-opening. Many shared a common concern:

These words highlight the urgent need for data-driven soil management. By knowing the soil’s true nutrient profile, farmers can reduce unnecessary input costs, prevent long-term soil degradation, and improve yields more sustainably.

Why Calibration Matters in Anuradhapura
• Large paddy cultivation areas → Precision testing ensures efficient fertilizer use for staple food crops.
• Irrigation-based farming systems → Soil nutrient balance is vital to optimize productivity across seasons.
• Farmer livelihood security → Accurate soil data helps farmers save money while protecting land for future generations.

Our Commitment

By calibrating in Anuradhapura, Biogenic Soil Sense is taking another important step toward building a Sri Lanka-wide soil nutrient database. This foundation will allow our Total Soil Nutrition Testing to provide localized, accurate, and actionable fertilizer recommendations—transforming how farmers make decisions and ensuring a more sustainable future for agriculture.

“Know your soil, know your nutrition demand.”
