Soil Calibration Journey – Anuradhapura District

On 19th September 2025, the Biogenic Soil Sense Field Scanning Team conducted an extensive round of soil nutrient analysis and calibration in Elayapaththuwa, Anuradhapura (8°27’13.7”N 80°20’06.1”E).

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most significant agricultural districts, with vast stretches of paddy fields nourished by ancient tanks and irrigation systems, alongside pulses, vegetables, and field crops. Its contribution to the nation’s food security makes it a critical region for building a strong soil calibration database.

Engaging with Farmers

During the fieldwork, our team had the opportunity to interact with local farmers. Their insights were both valuable and eye-opening. Many shared a common concern:

“For decades we have been applying far more chemical fertilizer than required, without knowing what is already present in our soil. If we can identify the actual nutrient levels, we can reduce the volume of fertilizer we use.”

These words highlight the urgent need for data-driven soil management. By knowing the soil’s true nutrient profile, farmers can reduce unnecessary input costs, prevent long-term soil degradation, and improve yields more sustainably.
